La Quinta, a sleepy-town of 5200 residents, was incorporated in 1982.  The La Quinta Resort & Spa attracted already back in the thirties famous people from Hollywood and business for a quiet retreat. Today, it is home to approximately 31,00 residents.  La Quinta has called itself the jewel of the desert and it may well be with its beautiful developments, golf clubs, lakes and quaint old town.

La Quintas name was derived from the Spanish term for fifth, as explorers would often travel for 4 days and rest on the fifth.  In fact, Point Happy, at the intersection of Washington Street and Highway 111, was once a watering hole and the original resting place of La Quinta.  La Quinta is one of the fastest-growing communities in the entire Coachella Valley.  Dominated by golf course communities PGA West, The Tradition, Alicante, Rancho La Quinta, the Citrus, Palm Royale, The Palms, Muirfield, Greg Norman Estates, Mountain View and the Quarry, the selections are unlimited. The vast majority of its open area is attractive for development with the opportunity for planned growth, with housing opportunities unparalleled in the Coachella Valley. From traditional single family homes and apartments to world class gated communities, La Quinta offers a variety of housing styles that will meet your primary or second home needs.

The latest developments are Trilogy, Tapestry, Puerta Azul, Piazza Serena, Carmela, Mosaic, Rancho Santana,
The Village, Fiore, Western Shadows, Santa Rosa Trails, La Cantera, Legacy Villas, Desert Cove, Estates at
Point Happy, Hideway, Citrus Country Club, Mountain View Country Club, Stone Creek Ranch, Palmilla, Muirfield,
The Vistas, The Bridge at Jefferson, Las Ventanas, Griffith Ranch, The Summit and Andalusia at Coral Mountain.
Coming soon is Viento at Palizada, Ridge View and Ridge Gate.

La Quinta has become a shopping and dining hub. La Quinta´s most recent figures indicate a continued and steady increase. Retail sales have tripled since 2000 and increased 50% since 2004. Projections for 2010 point to retail sales breaking $ 1 billion.

This year, La Quinta Resort was named "Best of the West" by "Meetings West" magazine which is a highly rated monthly convention resource. Another extraordinary resort is "Silver Rock Resort". The development features a championship golf course that is supposed to become part of the "Bob Hope Chrysler Classic" tournament. Built at the base of the stunningly serrated Santa Rosa Mountain ridges, Silver Rock´s incredible views and excellent course conditions is attracting golf players from around the world. They are planning to build besides the new permanent clubhouse an exquisite boutique Hotel, La Solana, high-end retail, restaurants, a lake, resort hotel and a second golf course designed by PGA legend Peter Jacobsen.

The Village is home to a pedestrian friendly retail center called Old Town La Quinta. Concerts on the lawn and Art under the Umbrellas are regular events. The most notable Addition to the Village is the new 9000 sqft La Quinta Museum.

Perhaps one of the city´s largest projects is the new Eisenhower Medical Center facility at Washington Street and Miles Avenue. The medical complex will occupy 15 acres and is the largest extension of Eisenhower Medical Center outside its main building in Rancho Mirage.

Besides transportation improvements, including the widening of Highway 111 to three lanes, "going green"
continues to be a top priority for the city.
